How to make your makeup last longer

How to make your makeup last longer

Sometimes we want our makeup to last longer than it usually would, maybe for an event or just to withstand the heat (not that we get much of that in England). I have searched and found a solution to the problem and even tested it myself through two (yes two!) ice bucket challenges. For those that don't know, Ice bucket challenges are the latest craze where people of all ages throw a bucket full of ice cold water over their head. Very crazy and not to mention FREEZING! But it's all for charity.

First you should check the ingredients list on your foundation, primer and moisturizer. The first ingredient should be the same on each bottle, either aqua, oil or silicone. The reason they should be the same is because you want all three products to sit nicely together on your skin but sadly water and oil do not mix. For example if you used an oil based primer and water based foundation then throughout the day the two products would separate meaning the foundation would simply melt off your skin. This is a factor which most of us don't think about.

Next, you should consider buying a setting spray. In the past when doing some research on different setting sprays, i found most to be overly priced and probably not worth the money. After a lot of searching i found the NYX dewey finish setting spray which is £8. They also have a matt formula but i chose the dewey finish purely because i prefer a more skin like appearance. Setting sprays work by providing a shield around your makeup meaning sweat wont disturb it. I honestly believe that this has the biggest impact on how long your make up will last.

Another helpful tip is to take a tissue (one that you would use to blow your noes) and gently press it against your foundation. The tissue will soak up all the excess ingredients in the foundation but leave the pigment in place which means longer lasting foundation.

How you apply your powder can also help with the lasting power of your foundation. I prefer to apply powder all of the face when making my foundation last longer. It helps to set makeup in place and provide an extra layer. Recently i discovered that when applying powder you should apply it with a powder puff which can be used to gently press the powder into the skin. Be careful though it can build a cakey look to the face so either use a translucent powder or use a powder brush to remove the excess.

If you are interested in how i increased the staying power of my foundation, i have listed my method below,

1. apply moisturizer and primer (remember they should have the same base)
2. spray setting spray over the face
3. apply 1 layer of foundation (also with the same base)
4.  tap face with a tissue
5. Touch up a few more areas that need extra coverage with more foundation.
6. spray setting spray over face again ( make sure you spray the entire face)
7. use powder puff and translucent powder (takes a little extra time than dusting powder over the face but worth taking the extra time)
8. apply any other powder products for example contour or blush.
9. finally spray the entire face with the setting spray.
